How often should I refinish the exterior of my log cabin?

Log cabins generally require refinishing every 3-5 years, depending on exposure to weather and sunlight, but regular maintenance checks can help extend the lifespan.

The refinishing process typically includes media blasting or sanding to remove old finishes, applying borate treatments for pest and rot protection, sealing with chinking, and applying stain and protective coatings.

High-quality, breathable stains specifically designed for log homes, such as those from Sascho and PermaChink, are recommended for their durability and UV protection.

Yes, most painting companies offer log repair services to replace or restore damaged sections before refinishing to ensure a smooth and durable finish.

The duration of the refinishing process varies based on the size of the cabin and the extent of the work needed, but it typically ranges from one to two weeks.

Our 8-Step Log Cabin Refinishing Process

Our team meets with the customer to discuss their needs, assess the condition of the log cabin, and provide an overview of the refinishing process. This includes evaluating the extent of weathering, damage, and previous coatings.

A thorough inspection of the log cabin is conducted to identify any repairs needed, such as replacing rotted logs or sealing gaps. Based on this inspection, the business provides a detailed estimate that includes the cost of labor, materials, and any additional services required.

Once the project is agreed upon, preparation work begins. This includes cleaning the log surfaces, removing old finishes through media blasting or sanding, and repairing any damaged logs. Proper preparation is crucial for ensuring the new finish adheres well and lasts longer.

To protect the logs from pests and rot, borate treatments are applied to the cleaned and prepped logs. This treatment is essential for long-term preservation and is safe for humans and the environment.

Chinking material is applied to seal gaps between the logs, providing a flexible, weather-resistant barrier that accommodates the natural movement of the logs. This step helps improve the energy efficiency and comfort of the log cabin.

Once the surface is fully prepped and sealed, the chosen stain is applied. The stain is brushed in to ensure deep penetration and even coverage. Depending on the selected stain system, two coats may be applied, followed by a clear protective coat for enhanced durability.

After the stain and protective coatings have been applied and fully cured, a final inspection is conducted to ensure quality and customer satisfaction. Any touch-ups or adjustments are made as needed. The work area is then cleaned up, and all protective coverings are removed.

Throughout the process, we will communicates regularly with the customer to ensure their satisfaction and address any questions or concerns they may have. After the project is complete, we may follow up with the customer to ensure their expectations were met and to address any future maintenance needs.
